The “2014 Loutraki ETU Triathlon European Cup & Mediterranean Championship” was held on 19 October in Loutraki, Greece. The event is included in the official racing calendar of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and therefore attracted the interest some of the main protagonists of the laborious as well as exciting Olympic sport. Also, factors as prize money for the winners, earning points for athletes and especially the fact that was hosted for the first time in Greece, in one of the most beautiful spa towns, contributed to further increase the interest of world’s triathlon community.
The European and Mediterranean Cup Championship was organized as a part of the series of races established by the Mediterranean Triathlon Federation (MTF) in which the presidential throne holds the president of the Greek Federation of Triathlon, George Yerolimpos, with the brand Triathlon1. The first race of the series took place last May in city of Avola in Italy, and was completed with the event in Loutraki, the biggest triathlon event after the Olympic Games in Athens, which was embraced by the municipalities involved in the race and local bodies.
The speakers at the press conference that took place on Friday 17.10 were:
• Miguel Alejandro Fernández Vázquez, Technical Delegate of the European Federation of Triathlon
• athletes Travis Johnston (N. Africa) and Alessia Orla (Italy), which are high in world rankings
• Alexis Makropoulos, Technical Director of the race
• Angela Thomas, Triathlon Champion and member of the ETU
They all praised the job done all this time by the organizing committee and referred to the exceptional weather conditions in the area, especially for the present season. They also expressed their hopes for high-level competitions that will be a harbinger for an even bigger Triathlon event in the area of Corinth, the years to come.
It was also mentioned the participation of more than 150 athletes from 22 countries (indicatively, Norway, N. Africa, M. Britain, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, Turkey, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Greece) .
The event started on Sunday at 9:30 am with the sport of swimming. Swimming followed by cycling in the central avenue of Loutraki with total distance of 20.1 km and completed with the 5km running which finished 2.5-3h later in the central square of Corinth.
The self-funded organization implemented by the Mediterranean and Greek Triathlon Federation with co-organization the Peloponnese Region, the cooperation of the sports center SPORTCAMP, hosted by the Municipality of Loutraki - Perachoras - St. Theodore and the City of Corinth and supported by the Tourism Development and Promotion Agency of Loutraki (LTO ) and Mythical Peloponnese.
Given the objective difficulty of implementing such a special event, the crucial contribution of local agencies and organizations has been a key element in the success of the major sporting event.

The implementation of the event in Loutraki, the city of major international sporting events, confirms the high level of expertise and infrastructure in the region, showcasing internationally Loutraki, Corinth and the Peloponnese as widely sport-tourism ideal destination. The economic benefits and the strengthen of tourism are very important for both businesses and tourist attractions for the whole of society, given the high economic status of the average triathlete, as well as the preparation and participation in such races requires several days of accommodation and group travel.
The participations reached the number of 126 athletes (namely 60 elite (47 elite men, 13 elite women)), 66 age groupers, (57 individual participants and 9-relay)) from 22 countries (indicatively, Norway, N. Africa M. Britain, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, Turkey, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Greece). It is worth mentioned the fact of participation of local athletes, who performed very well (including Vamvakidis - Athanassoulas - Katsaros, Karpetas D - Thomaidis G - Roumelioti E, Christos Rafailidis, Sotirios Dedes, Athanasios Dimakis, Dimitris Bakoulis, Kapetanakis Vasileios).
High importance is the “announcement – promise” that George Gerolympos did "... and the European Cup / Mediterranean Championship will be held next year in he region," and mentioned that "It also will be organized and the Half Iron Man, a particularly hard race, which will attract even more people from every corner of the planet " . After he thanked the bodies involved, the municipalities and local organizations he underlined the excellent and safe conduct of the event and how an international race like this, promote the destination.
The big event has attracted journalistic interest from around the world while is still being displayed in both nationwide scale SMEs and local media (television, radio, digital).
